Why Isn’t Zofran Over-the-Counter?

Since being prescribed Zofran (ondansetron), I’ve wondered why it wouldn’t be over the counter when it outperforms other OTC anti-emetics and has fewer and less severe side effects. The two main risks that this could be placed on are QT interval prolongation and serotonin syndrome; however, Imodium (loperamide, OTC antidiarrheal) also has risk of QT interval prolongation, and serotonin syndrome is nigh impossible with ondansetron alone.

It seems that the answer is that the FDA has limited OTC antiemetics to those which prevent motion sickness, which is one form of nausea that Zofran doesn't address as an 5HT-3 blocker.
